The important Cypriot poet Mona Savvidou-Theodoulou, in a letter to the author Evangelos Mavroudis, writes:
“You had a great inspiration to deal with the Cypriot facts and figures of 1948 on our island and to combine fiction with historical reality. Of course in order to give “greater visibility and transparency” to the party and political events of the time and to the struggles and denials that have shaped and are shaping the social scene of this place.
The research you have done is admirable and despite the tragic loss of your notes and books by the fire, you did not abandon your goal. You have added another very important book to the series of your works, but also to the Cypriot letters a valuable novel – a documentary. Your notes and references to real people immortalize the time you are writing about.
Apart from the remarkable issue that you brought to the surface and the relief characters that exist, or not, I must repeat (I had also spoken about “Return to Smyrna” as President of the Cyprus Association of Asia Minor, when we presented the book in Limassol) that you are also a master in your narrative technique. You were able to integrate so much information and data in a masterful way through the psychosynthesis and action of so many people.
The alternation of the places where the events take place and the first-person narration as well as the dialogues between the heroes of the novel are aptly rendered. But what matters is the messages! The humanitarian messages that exist. Condemnation of fascism, freedom, deliberate transgression of justice, formal law enforcement, abuse of power, selfishness, insult to human dignity, distortion of ideals, inhumanity, and many others that the conscience of every human being , reading the book awakens and excites. The victimization of man (Jews, Greeks, Cypriots, English, Turks) and the drama of the island have found another step to emerge from oblivion.
I sincerely congratulate you for justifying the person with your book “The journey”, which is the journey (internal and not) of each protagonist and secondary protagonist of your work as well as the path of the parties, with the mistakes, the disagreements, the expediencies, the omissions the obsessions, which cost this place its bad fate. Even the finding of revealing the truth at the end of the book (the note that Fifis had with him) is very successful. Destiny is unavoidable. The young Jew is the son of a musician, necessarily a German Nazi.
